Charming film by Luke Snellin. Now get your tapes out.
Last week I went on holiday by night train and listened to a few excellent recordings which I would like to share with you.
While Karin Dreijer was busy creating and promoting one of the best albums of 2009 with her solo project Fever Ray and scaring people with public apperances like this:
… her brother Olof creates music which sounds like “steep, rugged canyons, painted rock minarets, desert vistas framed by blooming wildflowers, soaring raptors and singing canyon wrens on the wildest remaining rivers” under the alias Oni Ayhun. So far, three records have been released,of which all have sold out in a very short time. Fortunately, there is a live recording of one of his live shows over at mnml ssgs.
The same blog also brought us a mix by Levon Vincent, who, in my humble opinion, created the most outstanding house records of 2009. For example this one:
Speaking of outstanding house music, Culoe De Song comes to my mind. There is a review of his debut album on Resident Advisor but taking a closer look at the tracklist it appears to be rather a compilation of released tracks, remixes and forthcoming material. There is a podcast mixed by Culoe De Song which provides an insight into the album which can be downloaded here. Besides two physical releases on Innervisions and Mule there are digital releases on the South African label Soulistic Music that can be bought via the AFROdesiaMP3 web shop.
As I rode deeper into the night I put on a live recording of Miracles Club out of Portland/Oregon. I found this at Linger & Quiets’ blog and if you like Black Meteoric Star you’ll love this! You can download it here. There is a 12″ and an album coming from these two respectively later in the year.
After those tasty synths I was craving for more so I put on Synth Summer by JD Twitch of Optimo. They have recently relaunched their website and it’s definitely worth a look or two or three…
I should have fallen asleep by now but as you might know from your own experience, there’s always someone who snores at night trains. What I was longing for now was machine driven sub-bass to cover those annoying human sounds. Plus, something to match the state of transcendency I was in by now.
This is it! The first mix CD released in conjuction with the SUB:STANCE party at Berghain. Don’t expect classic dubstep though (if that even exists…), to my ears it’s just music. Beautiful bass music. Due to a lack of words describing it more precisely I leave that to the people at Ostgut Ton and hopefully leave you with the urge to preview and buy the mix at Hardwax.
I’m off to Berghain to enjoy Detroit’s sexiest mutha fucka Moodymann tonight. Have a good weekend!
Welcome to the sixth installment of The Future is Past show after a prolonged hibernation period. Wearily we squint our eyes towards the sky and soberly find it’s still overcast and dismal right as we left it. Add to the misery, rain still reigns and our face is being by chapped by the cold. No one is there to embrace us in our sorrows and we feel a most undesirable sentiment creeping up inside us. Tip Tap. Bit by bit. Weltschmerz is increasing. Asudden solo piano music and films by Ingmar Bergman make sense. Longingly we wrap up warm in our blankets and reminisce about those days in summer, roller skates on our feet and the sun titilating our skin. Oh Melancholia. Dainty sweet sadness taken on lightness. You make us realize why life is worth living for. Now lets wallow in it…
The Future Is Past is a forth-nightly radio show featuring sixty minutes of eclectic and unmixed music from all genres. The next show will take us to France avec Monsieur Phillippe for another popular editon of pop cities, c’est bien ça?

Was noch?

Egal also, was einem wichtiger ist.

For the first post in 2010 we have asked our good friend Kacper Kapsa aka Pnk.Discorp to provide us with an insight into the rich musical heritage of his native country Poland. And what he came up with is nothing short of amazing!
Czary Mary Polish Grooves Mix selected and mixed by Pnk.Discorp
(czary mary means abracadabra)
1. Akademia Pana Kleksa – Kosmiczny prolog (Cosmic Prologue)
The song originates from the cult film series about Ambroży Kleks and his academy for male youth. The soundtrack was created by Andrzej Korzyński and has many futuristic references. Cosmic Prologue opens the first part of Kleks’s adventures.
2. Papa Dance – Narodziny Szejka (Sheik’s Birthday)
Papa Dance’s career has always been a balancing act between music and kitsch. Except for their debut album, which this song stems from, in which they have represented the second category – kitsch.
3. Alex Band – A w schronisku bal (And at the hotel there’s a ball)
A funk orchestra supported with Zuzu’s vocals. I did the “In a light edit” especially for this set.
4. Lombard – Diamentowa Kula (Diamond Ball)
A song from their debut album – ‘Death to discotheque’. The LP was an incredible success and led to nationwide media attention, mainly thanks to the hits sung by the female vocalist. This one is exceptionally performed by Grzegorz Stróżniak – the founder of the band. The version used here is an edit which you can download from my Soundcloud site.
5. Małgorzata Ostrowska – Meluzyna
Another piece from Mr. Kleks’s collection. This one is from the second part of his adventures. The song is sung by previously mentioned female vocalist of Lombard. Meluzyna is one the most perfect songs in the history of Polish music. If it was released now by e.g. Aeroplane it would certainly be a hit.
6. Arp Life – Baby Bump
Arp Life is the studio Project of Andrzej Korzyński (the author of Mr. Kleks’s Academy soundtrack). It was created at the close of the 70’s. Unfortunately, the band released only one album – Jumbo Jet. Of course, the track is taken from this album but the author of the re-edit is one the most talented Polish producers: Maciej Zambon.
7. Budka Suflera – Noc komety (The Night of the Comet)
Another edit by Zambon, who is a DJ and a member of Kukabara Soundsystem. He also edits, re-mixes and promotes Polish pieces of music. He just does a good job. Here: edit of the piece by Budka Suflera – most likely the ugliest band of the world.
8. Republika – Halucinations
Republic and their charismatic leader Grzegorz Ciechowski were one of the most talented bands of the 80’s. Their music was packed with literary references and association to psychedelic music.
9. Czerwone Gitary – Coda
‘Coda’ closes the LP ‘Rytm Ziemi’ (the Rhythm of the Earth). An regular rhythm, distorted Moog, and everything else exemplary for a band famous for mawkish songs à la the Beatles. This song bears no traces of this mawkish character though.

Pnk.Discorp is playing our Cosmic Dancer night on February 20 alongside Maximilian Skiba who has just finished a record with Kathy Diamond for Gomma Dance Tracks.

Founded 1964 in Meißen (East Germany), Stern Combo Meißen (SCM) is considered one of the seminal bands of the East German rock scene in the 70’s alongside Pudhys, Karat and Electra. “Der Kampf um den Südpol” is a track from their self-titled debut album released in 1971 through state-owned Amiga Records. The song is illustrated with various documentary clips of the South Pole conquest and and a recorded live set for East-German television. Enjoy.

ZOMBOCOMBO | MySpace Music Videos
Dompteur Mooner KING Disco Mix by DompteurMooner
Mooner says:
This mix is a bit older (2007 i believe) but sums up quite nicely what i play in a club – I know my other mixes here are quite often too conceptual. This one should make you dance . If not, go home!
hahaha!
BAVARIAN CLÄSSICKS Part1 by Dompteur Mooner and Kitt Bang by DompteurMooner
Mooner says:
This is a mix to take with humour! We took the worst bavarian 80s so-to-say “Bavaria-Italo” and other weird shit and put it alltogether into a mix.
Lots of fun for everyone, more fun for those of you that speak german, of course!

While the Future is still past, the origin of some pop music is particularly associated with a number of metropolises. Like an eclectic mixtape, urban territory and its diverse population is the perfect base for exploring unexplored sounds and creating unheard music. Nobody will foster any doubt that New York and London aren’t two of the most prolific players on the global playground when it comes to comparing pop history achievements. To prove that we’ll soon play the trump cards on this page…

This interview with Todd Terje was conducted right after his gig at Sweat Club in Leipzig last Friday where he played to a remarkably young crowd of Nu Rave-socialised dancers. They cheered at the end.
How Do you feel?
I feel sweaty, I’m hot, I’m a little bit tired cause I just had a cold…
Our friend Sebastiano of Club Silencio has just done a gorgeous guest mix for us. Grazie mille! In his own words: “Hey guys, here is a special mix for your blog. I would like to take the opportunity to present a new side project of mine called Robotalco that is solely dedicated to the roots house scene, such as early U.S. house music, garage and deep house. I will be releasing two records soon under that name: One on Mr.Chinn’s (Rongdfa, American Standard) new label called Godwrk and another one on Canyons’ (Dfa/Modular) Hole In The Sky Records.
The mix I have put together is inspired by my first taste of club culture in the 90’s, perhaps the golden age for Italian clubs! I was just a kid back then but my older friends started listening to mix tapes from a club called Ethos Mama Club in Gabicce (one of the most important clubs in the famous ‘riviera romagnola’) and Vae Victis (a very cool afterhour). The resident djs that played there were amongst others: Ralf, Ricky Montanari and Flavio Vecchi and they used to spin this kind of wonderful deep and groovy house music from great labels like Nu Groove, Bottom Line, and many others. Recently this sound has influenced me a lot and and I tried to recreate that kind of mood with a new Club Silencio remix for The Parallels, a Canadian band that will be out soon on Thisisnotanexit recods ( Listen to it here). Enjoy the mix”

This interview with Gavin Russom of Black Meteoric Star was conducted last Saturday at a secret location in Dresden. Turns out it wasn’t such a good idea to do it in a middle of a buzzing club at 4am completely drunk with a respondent feeling terrible and sick with flu. Add to this a recording device that only captured parts of the interview and well….I’m just telling you beforehand, so you don’t get too excited. Thanks to Gavin. Hope you are feeling better by now. Here we go.
Keep it it kind of short. I feel terrible.
[Yeah! Good start for an interview]
Perfect: A beard AND pink trousers. Someone buy him his next beer please!

We continue our studies on anything goes-territory and, yes, we have a change at the controls this time. It’s P-time. But fear not, as usual there is a lot of past and some future(ama) caught on tape. Wrapped by beautiful elegies by two of musics’ gloomiest and most bearded wizards, you get a mixtape full of nasty gals and big men, crazed sounds and rapturing melodies. FYA.

Not a day passes without a new category on our blog. This one is called ‘In Da Club’. And yes, the title is a reference to a rap song. After heated discussion with the head of our marketing department, we are being pushed to broaden our approach in order to attract a wider target audience (and subsequently increase ad revenues). This of course is not uncommon for a business to have to refocus and revisit their targeting, especially if it was not clearly identified in the beginning stages of their launch.
We have been told that it is necessary to find the right balance when defining our target market in a way that causes our audience to recognize that we are talking specifically to them. Therefore introducing references to Hip Hop seems like a super-excellent solution. I mean, seriously. Who is interested in disco edits these days?
That leaves me to conclude this post with a statement of intent for the aforementioned category. To woe the intelligentsia at the other end of our reader demographic I would hereby like to take the opportunity to quote Horace and merely say that we are difficili, queruli, laudatori temporis acti. Se puero, castigator, cesorque minoruri.* (Grumbler, inclined to praise the way of the world when they were boys, to play the critics and to be censors of a new generation). Word!
A mix done in early 2009 to capture my fuzzy feelings on a Sunday afternoon.
