Kein Schreibfehler: Cosmic Dancer ist total Franken-Johannes im Juli. Mit Johannes Paluka alias Iron Curtis, Johannes Albert und Jürgen Johannes Albert alias Jool kommen gleich drei der Namensvetter des Apostels zum Auflegen vorbei.

Iron Curtis und Jool kommen beide ursprünglich aus Nürnberg, wo sie im K4-Zentralcafe immer noch gemeinsam die Partyreihe Pumping Velvet schmeißen. Die musikalische Ausrichtung der Party – House, Disco, Techno, BassMusic – spiegelt sich auch in deren eigener Musik wieder. Bei Iron Curtis heißt das vor allem wissender House mit mal melancholischer, mal enthusiastischer Note. Seine EPs für Mirau oder Mule bekommen von besseren DJs gerade ordentlich Playtime.
Jool frönt mit seinen Edits derweil unter dem Edit Piafra-Pseudonym seiner Liebe zu New Wave, Punkfunk, Glam etc.
Johannes Albert kommt zwar ursprünglich auch aus Franken, genauer gesagt aus Würzburg, lebt aber inzwischen wie Iron Curtis in Berlin. Eigentlich DJ mit Leib und Seele, der seine letzten 80 Mark Taschengeld im Zweifel immer für eine obskure Boogie-Platte ausgeben würde, ist er jüngst auch als House-Produzent für das White-Label in Erscheinung getreten. Und das mit Verve. Ganz so wie seine DJ-Sets, die sich vor allem eins zum Ziel setzen – Spass!

Zum BRN-Trubel gastiert mit Cupca der House-Fels in der Chemnitzer Brandung bei Cosmic Dancer.

Cupca hat schon früh die notwendigen Stationen für eine werkgerechte DJ-Karriere durchlebt. Mixen am heimischen Doppelkassettendeck, Ferienjob im Plattenladen, Kontakten mit den ortsansässigen Playern, mit flatternden Hosen und noch halb grün hinter den Ohren für Felix da Housecat eröffnen. Spätestens da war klar, dass mit dem Jungen zu rechnen sein wird und so folgten die Residencies in den hippen Kaschemmen der Stadt wie von selbst. Heute veranstaltet er mit Citylights im Atomino die beste Chemnitzer Clubnacht für geschmackvollen House. Seine DJ-Sets leben von der Auseinandersetzung mit den Tänzern und einem ausgewogenen Verhältnis von aktuellen, routinierten und exponierten Tracks.

Und das mit der Publikumsarbeit ist ja auch ein Anliegen der Gastgeber The Moroders, die ihren Hi-Quality-Senf selbstredend mit aufs Brot schmieren werden.

Wenn Session Victim im Wonnemonat live bei Cosmic Dancer spielen, kann man erleben, wie gut gelaunter House im Jahre 2010 funktioniert. Zeitgemäß und Disco-inspiriert sind Session Victim-Platten kleine Geschenke für Menschen, die beim Tanzen gerne grinsen.

Denn der Spaß an der Sache wird bei Hauke Freer und Matthias Reiling groß geschrieben. Ob beim Schrauben im Studio, beim Live-Spielen oder beim eigenhändigen Plattenstempeln für das Berliner Stamm- und Vinyl-Only-Label Retreat, das Hauke zusammen mit Quarion betreibt – „einfach mal machen“ heißt die simple , aber effektive Devise. Denn das trägt Früchte. Seit dem Debütrelease auf Real Soon können Session Victim produzieren was sie wollen, die Platten gehen weg wie geschnitten Brot. Irgendwie kann man sich auch kaum wehren gegen diese Tracks, die mal verspielt mit Pianogrooves, mal funky mit gesampleten Gitarrenlicks daherkommen, immer aber ordentlich Druck verbreiten und bei deren Entwicklung sich die Jungs wahrscheinlich gegenseitig ins Fäustchen lachen.

Absehbar also, dass bei Cosmic Dancer mit Session Victims’ Liveset und den Platten der Gastgeber und Gelegenheits-Schelme The Moroders viel gelacht wird.

Im April begrüßen The Moroders mit Nathan aka Hrdvsion den Verspielteren der Gebrüder Jonson bei Cosmic Dancer.

Als er mit acht Jahren das Midi-Keyboard seines Vaters entdeckte, begann eine bis heute andauernde Entdeckungsreise, die ihn zunächst in Klangwelten geführt hat, die voller Störimpulse, voller Verzerrungen waren und die vorher nur Geistesverwandte wie Aphex Twin oder Squarepusher betreten hatten. Sein erstes Album „25 Cents“ erinnert noch an diesen Trip.

Zwei Handvoll Releases (vor allem für das Haus und Hof-Label Wagon Repair), unzählige Remixe und Auftritte zum Beispiel beim Sonar-Festival oder in der Londoner Fabric, ein Umzug aus der kanadischen Heimat nach Berlin und insgesamt acht Jahre später hat sich sein Sound entschlackt. Nun, da das neue Album „Where Did You Just Go?“ im Mai ansteht, ist das Fundament mehr denn je klassischer Techno und House, oben drüber schwirren aber immer noch die wandelbaren Hrdvsion-Sounds, die mal humorvoll, mal mit heiligem Ernst die Richtung auch in seinem Live-Set vorgeben. Auch heute bei Cosmic Dancer.

Where are you from?
I hail from the Ivory Coast.

Why did you leave Ivory Coast for Germany in 1992?
For political reasons. Plus, I had no prospects there whatsoever.

How did you get into electronic music in Germany?
When I met my girlfriend and mother of my son Thierry 12 years ago she invited me to the Love Parade in Berlin. That was on July 14th 1997 and it blew me away. From this day on I wanted to be a DJ. From my first salary as a carpenter I instantly bought two Technics-turntables and a mixer and started to teach myself mixing records. At that time I was living in Hamburg where I met Ollie from Underground Solution which was the most popular record shop in the north back then. Soon, I found out what kind of music I liked as a DJ.

You began producing in Bordeaux. Did you already have any musical education back then or was it all self-taught?
In Bordeaux I learned all the basics. How to record vocals, guitar, drums etc. in a proper studio. What a bass drum, a snare, Hi-Hat is. What you need in your home studio. I didn’t really have a musical education. It’s all, as you said, self-taught. Learning by doing.

You are working together a lot with musicians from Africa. How does that work out? Do you meet up at studios and do you also play for audiences?
All those musicians from Africa I work with still live there. Once a year I travel to Africa to record with them. When I’m there I’m actually collecting ideas. Usually, I sing to them what I would like them to play. Then, back in Germany, I work with those recordings in my home studio. But sometimes we also work over the phone. I send a demo via email and sing it to them again over the phone. Then they record the tracks and send them back. I did a remix for Kunyuki from Japan which will be out on Mule Musiq in April which was done this way.
I have to add that neither me nor my musicians in Africa can read or write notes. That’s why I have to present all my ideas by singing to them which I really enjoy! I would love to play with them on festivals in Europe, Asia and the USA but those are dreams of the future. Of course, we have to find someone who will finance a project like this.

There are a lot of references in your music to Senegal – your label Baobab (like the band of the same name), the track ‘Wind of Gorée’ (a former island of slaves). Plus, the track ‘Abuja’ (named after the capital of Nigeria) and the track ‘Sun of Gao’ (a city in Mali). Apparently, you’re not focused on Ivory Coast when it comes to collaborating. Do you feel a connection to Pan-Africanism? Or do you especially feel connected to the countries of western Africa?
„Baobab“ represents strength, like the tree of the same name. It’s true, my musicians hail from different African countries (Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Nigeria, Ivory Coast), hence all those track titles. When I’m producing I try to put myself in a certain position, like in a state of trance. When I worked at ‘Wind of Gorée’ I felt connected to the slaves who were shipped from this island to all over the world.
The music from Ivory Coast is different, more Pop-orientated. Mali, Guinea, Senegal and Nigeria have more Jazz, Soul and Blues. That’s where artists I admire like Ali Farka Touré (King of the Desert-Blues), Toumani Diabeté (King of the Cora), Fela Kuti (King of Afro-Beat) come from. I try to combine their style of music with my knowledge of electronic music. That’s how my music is created. You can hear all those influences on my album ‘Mande’ (which is due on Still Music in summer).

You use a lot of self-recorded samples of traditional african instruments, for example the Cora which is a kind of harp or the Sabar drum. Do you have a favourite instrument? Can you play some yourself?
That’s true, my music bases a lot on those instruments. The Sabar drum is from Senegal and consists of four drums arranged side by side. It’s played by hand and with a wooden stick and you can hear it in almost all of my tracks. I worked with Leye M Baye, one of the best drummers in Africa, and footage of those sessions will be included on the DVD accompanying my album ‘Mande’. On the track ‚Le Cercle Peul’ I used the Cora, a kind of guitar with 17 strings, on the tracks ‘Sun of Gao’ and ‘Emotion du Peul’ I used the Ngoni which only has 3 strings. I can fairly play the Balafon (the african xylophon) which I did for ‘Wind of Goree’. Fortunately, nowadays you can record everything and rearrange it later at the computer. I keep on learning and try to get better, of course. I have to mention the Talking Drum which is from Senegal and Nigeria. But I like all of them. However, I have to admit that I use the Belafon quite often as it’s easy to play for me.

Have you played your tracks to people from home and how was the feedback? Does House and Techno exist in western Africa?
At home people don’t understand this kind of music yet. That’s no surprise because there are no House and Techno parties at all. Young people in Ivory Coast mostly listen to Coupé Decalé and Zouglou. But everyone there likes my track ‘Himalaya’. I have some fans in South Africa. One day I would like to open up club for Techno and House music there but before I have to find someone who would finance it. So, dreams of the future again.

What do think about the renaissance of Afro in Europe and the USA? Do you appreciate the work of labels like Strut, Soul Jazz, Honest Jon’s or Soundway? And what is your opinion regarding the countless House tracks with African samples nowadays?
Well, that’s a difficult topic for me cause I don’t think it’s Afro just because someone uses an African vocal. When I started to release music many people were surprised cause it was something new. That’s what I’m aiming for. Music based on African instruments but with an electronic feel to it so people have something to connect to.
You can hear that Culoe De Song is from South Africa. Joe Clausell is Afro even though he’s not from Africa. But he works with a lot of African musicians and you can sense that in his music. Also Henrik Schwarz released a great Afro track on Innervissions but again it only came out this way because he worked with African musicians. You can’t do a certain kind of music without having experienced the culture in which the music is rooted in. That’s why some people don’t understand the music I’m doing. For example Minimal, everyone understands it cause it’s not rooted in any culture.

Besides your African roots, what inspires you when making music?
As I mentioned, when I produce I try to put myself in a certain state of mind. I draw a lot of strength and inspiration from interviews with good musicians (I like the Slices-DVDs and the RBMA-lectures). After watching a good interview I often feel the urge to go to the studio. Also, just listening to music inspires me. Before I sit down in front of the computer I listen to my favourite records for 30 to 60 minutes. Not to copy from them, just to put myself in the right mood.

At the moment you’re living in Lübeck, a city in northern Germany. Is there a scene for electronic music and artists you know with whom you collaborate?
Unfortunately not! I can’t play the music I love there cause that would clear the dancefloor. That’s a shame cause I feel that there’s a potential audience but they don’t go to the clubs cause the clubs are all too commercial.
So far, I have been working on my own even though I would like to collaborate more in the future. Currently I’m working on a project going on with Wareika from Hamburg which is close by.

What can we expect from you in the future? Are there any plans to put together a live set? Will there be releases by other artists than you on your label?
I have had requests for a live set but that’s out of question at the moment as I’m in the middle of producing an album for a Japanese label. In addition, I’m working on some new 12″s for my labels Baobab Music and Baoba Secret plus the second one for Fatsouls Records from San Francisco. In terms of DJing I enjoy beeing able to play other people’s music and I love playing vinyl, no CDs, no MP3s. I think I’ll wait with the live set consisting only of my own material until I have some more fans.
Regarding my labels I could of course release other people’s music but then it has to fit. Not only musically but also mentality-wise because we’re not earning any money with the label. It’s a passion and I don’t want to end up arguing about money.

Which team do you keep your fingers crossed for during the World Cup?
I hope any African team will suceed. First and foremost my heart beats for ‘The Elefants’ of course. Do you know who I mean?

Mr Raoul K is playing Cosmic Dancer on March 20 2010. It’s at Altes Wettbüro in Dresden and the fun starts at 10 pm.

Cosmic Dancer kleidet sich weiß-rot-gestreift im Februar und richtet den Blick auf eine bisher weniger erforschte Discoregion. The Moroders erwarten ein Disco-Dreierpack aus Polen, angeführt von Warschaus’ Maximilian Skiba.

Max konnte seinen Ruf als Elektro-Wunderkind schon 2005 nicht mehr abschütteln, als er auf dem Danziger Astigmatic Festival den Newcomerpreis abräumte. Ein Jahr später, mit gerade mal 19 Jahren, debütierte er auf dem Kölner Label Boxer und ließ Releases für Labels wie Terranova und Mantra Vibes folgen. Seine Disco- und Italo-Affinität war da schon längst nicht mehr zu leugnen. Erst im November 2009 veröffentlichte Skylax schließlich „The Genius of Maximilian Skiba“. Sicher selbstbewusst betitelt, aber absolut zu Recht angesichts mindestens drei Tanzflächenfüller auf der Platte.

Doch damit nicht genug. Mit Langzeitfreund Artur8 bastelt er unter dem King Of Kong-Alias, während seine Discoband The KDMS mit den Vocals von Frontfrau Kathy Diamond besticht. Gerade erst ist eine Platte von The KDMS auf Gomma herausgekommen, mit niemand anderem als Discolegende Nicky „The Gallery“ Siano an der Remixfront.

Max’ Liveset wird unterstützt von den DJs Pnk.Discorp aus Częstochowa und Zambon aus Posen, die beiden Disco-Statthalter in ihren jeweiligen Heimatstädten. Beide sind außerdem ausgewiesene Kenner in Sachen polnischer Musikgeschichte und ihre Edits erfreuen sich immer größerer Beliebtheit bei denjenigen Tanzmusik-Nerds, die bei Anglozentrismus nicht stehen bleiben.

Als solche lassen sich ja auch The Moroders bezeichnen, die den Abend abrunden werden.

Der Mann ist eine Legende. Punkt. Ganz in der Nähe des Gardasees, im Club Typhoon in Gambara, hat Beppe Loda in den Achtziger Jahren Tanzmusikgeschichte geschrieben. In seiner ganz auf ihn zugeschnittenen DJ-Kabine mixte er auf bis dahin ungehörte Weise von Afro/Brasil über Fusion und Prog bis zu New Wave, Synth-Pop und früher Elektronik alles, was seinen persönlichen Geschmackstest überstand und tut dies auch mit über 50 Jahren noch. Dabei hat Beppe das Entstehen von Cosmic bzw. Afro entscheidend mitgeprägt. Oder wie er es lieber nennt: Freestyle, das virtuose Mixen von eklektischer Musik im Sinne eines psychedelischen Erlebnisses und ohne gängige DJ-Eitelkeiten. Nie hat Cosmic Dancer seinem Namen mehr Ehre gemacht!

Der Sommer kehrt zurück zu Cosmic Dancer im Januar, denn wir haben uns den DJ ins Alte Wettbüro eingeladen, der die Morgenröte am authentischsten vertonen kann. Steffen Bennemann ist einer der Väter des besten Festivals unserer Welt, dem Nachtdigital, macht unter dem Pseudonym Koi dubbigen House für Styrax Leaves und Ortloff und legt hauptamtlich in geschätzten Clubs wie Leipzigs Distillery und Jenas Kassablanca House und Techno auf: Nicht einfach so, sondern gleich dreifach mit Gefühl.
Einerseits ist da die Musik, die er spielt. Er pickt nur Platten mit Esprit heraus, oft bittersüß und doch mit Widerhaken, aber irgendwie immer wunderschön. Die Übergänge sind sanft und ehrfürchtig zugleich, was sein Set zu einer echten Erfahrung macht und einem jegliche bösen Gedanken aus dem Kopf pustet. Bewusstseinserweiterung ohne Nachwirkungen. Dazu das ständige Grinsen, das Lächeln von Einem, der die Musik genießt. Wer seine berauschenden Sets vom Nachtdigital kennt, weiß ohnehin Bescheid.
Egal also, was einem wichtiger ist. Inhalt, Art und Weise oder Form…Steffen Bennemann macht es mit Gefühl.

Wenn John Daly im August zum Auflegen im Alten Wettbüro vorbeikommt, erfüllt sich ein langgehegter Wunsch bei Cosmic Dancer. Der Mann aus Irland gehört zum Besten, was House mit dem Attribut ‚Deep’ in den letzten Jahren hervorgebracht hat.

Seine Tracks haben allerdings mit Deephouse-Stangenware nichts zu tun. Die EPs für Labels wie Francois Ks’ Wave Music, Drumpoet Community oder sein eigenes Feel Music zeugen vielmehr von einer ganz individuellen Handschrift. Vor allem die häufig vorkommenden kosmischen Chords sind nichts anderes als unwiderstehlich. Geformt nicht nur durch die Erfahrungen aus dem Partyleben seiner irischen Heimatstadt Cork, sondern im Speziellen durch eine immense Plattensammlung. Die geliebte Musik aus den Siebzigern nutzt John Daly dann auch häufig als Klangquelle. Sei es psychedelischer Rock von Pink Floyd oder Led Zepellin, Krautrock und Spacemusik von Tangerine Dream, Westcoast-Hippiekram oder natürlich Disco. Dass Techno und House freilich in seiner Einflussliste trotzdem ganz vorn steht, beweist er mit seinem erst kürzlich gegründeten Label One Track Records. In guter Chicago-Tradition sieht das Labelkonzept vor, dass sich jede Platte einem Track widmet, der in mehreren Versionen präsentiert wird. Die bisher zwei Katalognummern sind dann auch die Dub-infizierten Smasher mit Chicago-Einschlag geworden, die man unter diesen Voraussetzungen von einem Fachmann wie John Daly erwarten konnte. Dass seine DJ-Sets nicht nur mitreißend sind, sondern auch voller kleiner Überraschungen stecken, dürfte spätestens jetzt klar sein.

Keine Frage, dass auch die Gastgeber The Moroders ihre Plattenregale nach den besonderen Perlen durchforsten und den Abend angemessen einleiten werden.

Raoul hat genug erlebt, um zwei Leben zu füllen. Im Schnelldurchlauf: Kriegsflüchtling von der Elfenbeinküste, Tischlerlehre in Hamburg, Liebesumzug nach Lübeck, Techno- und House-Infektion, Praktikum in Bordeaux, erste Studio-Sessions. Zwischendrin ist er immer mal wieder auf seinem Heimatkontinent, um die Rhythmen und Instrumente in der einheimischen Musik zu studieren.

Aus den entsprechenden Aufnahmen wird daheim in Lübeck ein Culture Clash aus afrikanischer Tradition und abendländischer Technomoderne. Seine Veröffentlichungen auf seinem eigenem Label Baobab bzw. auf Mule Records aus Japan kommen im Gegensatz zu den zahlreichen zeitgenössischen Techno-Ansätzen endlich mal organisch und elegant daher.
