A visit at the robot’s place: Alexander Dorn aka Credit 00 lives at the edge of Dresden’s nightlife district Neustadt door to door with two other DJs from the freshly revived Idealfun-collective. His recent tracks for the Uncanny Valley label are just the tip of the iceberg of his musical work. The master class student at Dresden’s art college HFBK is also a great and versatile DJ who is just doing his thing, as you can hear in the mix he did for us. Besides that, Alex was one of the heads of the infamous but now gone Robodance, a club night in Dresden which was dedicated to true Electro in both style and music.

As we enter the workroom-turned-studio in his flat, our first glimpse falls on the immense amount of gear towered up next to his desk. The bright sun that shines through the window on that day reveals some dust on the synthesizers and drum machines. But that doesn’t mean they’re not in use and to underline that fact he quickly gives us a taste of some sounds of his music machines. After listening to some fresh tracks we sit down for a tea, some hand-rolled cigarettes and a little chat.

You are pretty much associated with music that came out before the digital era. Can you explain your fascination for those old synthesizers and drum machines?

For me it was always something like an archaeological impulse. Even back then in my hometown Plauen I was fascinated by those sounds, even though I was heavily into Hip Hop at this time. I just wanted to know how those guys made that music. I thought, “wow this has to be mega complicated technology”. And when I got my hands on some machines in the first place I realized that they have been using presets already twenty-five years ago. When I first listened to the sounds of the Yamaha DX7, I immediately thought of five Italo tracks where this machine apparently has been used. It seems that everybody was using the same synths like the DX7 or the Jupiter-8! Not only the whole Italo guys, but also people like Madonna. So by finding out how my favourite records were created I somehow stumbled into production… On top of that I just love how those machines look and how they feel. That’s maybe also why I paint them and build wooden models of some of my favorites.

Do you have a certain approach when it comes to making music?

I certainly don’t have a master plan. Sometimes I just wake up, sit down at the machines, make some beats just for fun and suddenly something like a track appears. I used to record everything live in one take and left it like that. Just recently I started to record individual stems to be able to overdub some parts.

Do you plan to prepare a live set?

Yeah, I have something on my mind. Of course it will take some more time to realize it.

Would it be the first time you play live?

No, I’ve already played a live set before with a friend of mine in 2003 or 2004. But it was more like Electro-Bass style with a classic setup: a MPC, Clavia Nord Modular, a Juno-106 and vocals. I remember one great party in a squat in Dresden. We actually thought it was shit, but the people seemed to really liked it. In the end it was a great mess. [laughs]

Last autumn, I played a live set together with Traxx at Dresden’s Cynetart which is a festival for computer-based art. Initially, Traxx wanted to play with Veronica Vasicka (head of the Minimal Wave label; editor’s note) but that didn’t materialize for some reason. So one day before the show he asked me if I wanted to join and I thought of it as a pretty good idea. So we met at my place and made some tracks including a new version of DAF’s “Der Räuber und der Prinz” with new vocals by my good friend Mase. And despite the fact that in the end Mase was to shy to actually appear on stage it was big fun. We had a decent setup: an Alesis sequencer, a 101, a 606, an old Boss-drum-computer, Juno 6 and a DX7. In retrospect it was quite a strange situation. If you consider that we set up our old and dusty gear at a festival for computer-based art. All those guys behind their laptops. And then our buzzing equipment. [laughs]

Idealfun.de has been revived recently. What was the story behind it in the first place and what can we expect for the future?

We started it in 2001. I met some of the guys for the first time when I tried to get a PA for my birthday party at an off-location. They came up with those really heavy old tube amplifiers that we had to carry in a group of four. We tapped the wire from a friend’s kitchen. And in the end we had an enormous loud PA, so loud that I feared to get the cops’ attention. But that didn’t happen and it turned out to be a great party and a lot people came up afterwards telling me it was something the have been missing since the mid-nineties.

Yeah, and then everything started. We organised more parties and started to look for a name. A friend of ours had a t-shirt label called Ideal and so we named it Idealfun, like a sub-label for Ideal. And then we started the website and gathered pretty much every decent Techno-, House- and Electro-artist in Dresden under the label. It has never been supposed to be a label to release records, it was more like a platform for all those artists. For some time it has been neglected though it was still online. And recently I started to update it, because I still like the idea of having your content on a website and not just scattered around on social networks.

Let’s talk about the mix. What’s the idea behind it?

Oh, I don’t know. I guess, it’s just music I’ve been loving for ages. The mix came about when I recently discovered a lot of good four-to-the-floor-Techno records, which doesn’t happen often too me, and then tried to mix it with some of my all time favourites.

I must have been listening to almost all kinds of electronic music until my mid-twenties. It all started with Hip-Hop, but also Reggae and Drum’n’Bass. Through the Electro-inspired Hip-Hop-artist like Afrika Bambaataa or Ice-T I discovered Electro. Then Techno and IDM came along.

And when I started DJing, I was playing a lot of Ghetto Bass. I’ve always played different stuff. But all the ass’n’titties-stuff is what most people remember. It seems that nowadays I get pigeonholed as an Italo-DJ but I think the mixes I’ve done so far show a far wider spectrum.

As a DJ it seems you are especially interested in music that pays tribute to the old days in some way or another. Are you still interested in new music?

I’m certainly interested in new music! But for my own tracks I do not claim to make revolutionary new music, in an evolutional kind of way.

Of course, I’m influenced by a lot of stuff, e.g. Heinrich Müller. But in the end it has to be a cool tune and not just another copy of a more or less known blueprint. It’s all about that little nuances which make your sound special. Of course the instruments you use play an important role. If you are using a lot of old synthesizers, your tracks will sound more similar to the ‘old music’.

I found it pretty funny when Dubstep came up. Everybody said it was something new, but for me it was more like a 2-Step or UK-Garage-remake.

Also I don’t pay attention to buying or playing ‘danceable’ tracks. I mean, I personally could dance to every track I like.

Unter den vielen guten Plattenlabels, die Leipzig in den letzten Jahren hervorgebracht hat, ist Ortloff für uns sicher eines der spannendsten. Seit 2009 erschienen drei Platten, die mit jeweils vier Stücken verschiedener Produzenten und den selbstgefertigten Hüllen eine eigene Geschichte erzählen. Um den Mikrokosmos Ortloff zu erkunden, haben wir Tilman Grundig ein paar Fragen gestellt und ihn um einen DJ-Mix gebeten, der unter dem Interview zum Download bereit steht. Denn neben seiner eigentlichen Arbeit als Grafikdesigner ist er unter dem Psydonym Sebastian Dubiel auch als DJ unterwegs und schlägt sich so manche Nacht mit Drummachine und Synthesizer um die Ohren.

Till, erzähl uns doch bitte, was es mit Ortloff auf sich hat!
Diese Frage ist nicht wirklich einfach zu beantworten. Begonnen hat das Ganze im Frühling/Sommer 2007 — vier Menschen mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund, teilweise schon länger befreundet, hatten das Bedürfnis, einen Raum zum Selbstverwirklichen zu haben. Ohne wirklich groß zu zögern, wurden die Kräfte zum Suchen eines geeigneten Raumes gebündelt und im Juni unterschrieben wir den Mietvertrag für ein komplettes Haus im Leipziger Westen. Wir wussten da noch nicht, was uns erwarten würde und wieviel Zeit, Kraft und Geld es kosten würde, dieses Haus unseren Ansprüchen anzupassen. Irgendwann stiessen wir auf einen alten Bauplan, auf dem der Name des Bauherren stand. Ein Name gefunden: Ortloff. Im Dezember 2007 wurde die Galerie im Erdgeschoss und die erste Etage mit den sich darin befindlichen Arbeitsräumen mit einer Ausstellung und einer Party eingeweiht. Seitdem gibt es in der Galerie regelmäßig Ausstellungen mit Arbeiten von (meist befreundeten) Künstlern, kleinere Konzerte, …
In der ersten Etage wird gearbeitet und in der zweiten Etage gibt es eine Wohnung. Wo die Reise hingehen wird, wissen wir nicht, aber Spaß macht es nach wie vor.

Wie ist die Aufgabenverteilung bei Ortloff?
Es hat sich mit der Zeit ergeben, dass jeder von uns für unterschiedliche Aufgabenbereiche „zuständig“ ist. Georg studiert Malerei an der HGB und kümmert sich mit Julius, der Geographie studiert, hauptsächlich um die Bespielung der Galerie. Julius und ich kümmern uns ums Label. Und ich bin ja im richtigen Leben Graphikdesigner und mache alles, was so an Gestaltung anfällt — so gibt es zum Beispiel für die Plattenlabels extra angefertigte Schriften.
Am Ende machen wir doch fast immer alles zusammen, sei es das Auswählen der Künstler für die kommenden Ausstellungen, oder auch das Bedrucken der Plattenhüllen in unserem Siebdruckraum.

Was gab den Ausschlag, als Ortloff Platten zu veröffentlichen?
Das entstand aus einer „Bierlaune“. Die Jungs von Mod.Civil sind schon über Jahre hinweg mit uns befreundet und von Anfang beim musikalischen Teil von Ortloff dabei. Wie es so oft ist — irgendwann meinte einer, „Lass’ uns doch ein Label machen.“ Und auch wir große Musik- und Vinyl-Liebhaber sind, war klar, dass wir das machen. Klar war auch, dass das Label eng verbunden sein soll, mit allem, was zum Ortloff gehört. So finden sich auf den bisherigen drei Veröffentlichungen ausschliesslich Stücke von befreundeten Musikern, die bei unseren Veranstanstaltungen aufgelegt oder live gespielt haben. Wie bei den Ausstellungen ist auch hier das Persönliche sehr wichtig.

Bisher habt ihr drei Platten als Various Artists-EPs veröffentlicht. Warum habt ihr euch dafür entschieden und gegen die klassische Artist-EP?
Wir wollen mit dieser Reihe ein musikalisches Spektrum zeigen — genauso, wie es auf unseren Veranstaltungen der Fall war. Es gab keine Entscheidung gegen eine klassische Artist-EP. Irgendwie war bei den drei ersten Platten immer klar, dass vier verschiedene Künstler rauf sollen.

Wie wählt ihr die Tracks-/Künstler aus?
Wir fragen die Musiker, ob sie Lust haben, einen Track bei uns zu veröffentlich. Leider ist es immer so gewesen, dass wir nicht von allen angefragten Künstlern Stücke nehmen konnten. Nicht, dass diese nicht gut genug gewesen wären — vielmehr ist es uns immer wichtig, dass alle Tracks auf einer Platte zusammenpassen.

Was steht als nächstes auf Ortloff an?
Lustigerweise gibt es demnächst eine klassische Artist-EP. Eigentlich sind es gleich zwei. Mod.Civil werden eine Doppel-EP releasen. Erst Teil 1 und einige Wochen später Teil 2. Auch äußerlich werden sich die beiden Platten von den ersten drei unterscheiden, reduzierter sein, denn wir schlagen mit ihnen ein neues Kapitel auf.

Ihr veranstaltet auch regelmäßig Partys und Konzerte im Ortloff. Was waren bis jetzt die bedeutsamsten Momente für dich?
Momente des kollektiven Loslassens. Ich kann’s nicht beschreiben — wer dabei war, weiß mit Sicherheit, was ich meine.

Ich habe immer wieder von der Party mit John Roberts gehört. Was war da los?
Das wüsste ich auch gern. Für mich im Vorfeld die Party des Jahres. Zwei Tage vorher bin ich übel von einer Leiter gekracht und durfte diese Nacht mit einem gebrochenen Handgelenk im Krankenhaus verbringen. Nach meiner Entlassung am folgenden Tag habe ich das Schlachtfeld bei uns gesehen. Es müssen sich unbeschreibliche Szenen abgespielt haben

Und nun zu deinem Mix. Wie ist er entstanden und was war deine Intention dabei?
Seine Entstehung hat fast ein ganzes Wochenende in Anspruch genommen. Die meiste Zeit habe ich mit dem Durchstöbern meines Plattenregales verbracht – man bleibt ja immer an der einen oder anderen Platte hängen, die man sich dann unbedingt anhören muss. Oft verliere ich dann das eigentliche Ziel aus den Augen … Letztenendes ist nun eine kleine Reise entstanden durch meinen aktuellen Geschmack was zeitgenössische Musik betrifft.

Nummer 14 in unserer Mixserie kommt von Djokerface, der in Dresden als einer der elegantesten DJs bekannt ist. Vielleicht auch kleidungtechnisch, definitv aber, was seine Mixkünste betrifft. In seinem vierstündigen Mammutmix nimmt er euch mit von Dubtechno zu Disco und House und dann wieder zurück.

Wo kommst du eigentlich genau her und wann bist du in Dresden gelandet? Und wie stehst du zur Clubkultur in der Stadt?
Ich bin gebürtiger Dresdner und häng auch sehr an meiner Heimat. Nicht nur an der Stadt und was sie alles zu bieten hat, sondern natürlich auch an der Clubkultur. Die Clubkultur hat ihren ganz eigenen Charme. Auch wenn die Szene oft als klein bezeichnet wird, so hat man sehr viele Möglichkeiten sich als Gast musikalisch auszutoben und sich das rauszupicken, was einem gefällt. Ich denke, dass Dresden da einiges zu bieten hat, die Vielfalt ist auf jeden Fall da.

Wann hast du angefangen aufzulegen und wie bist du dazu gekommen?
Das ist eine ganz witzige Geschichte. Meine Eltern haben da gewissen Anteil dran. Irgendwann habe ich von meinen Eltern ein paar Tapes aus ihrer Zeit bekommen und diesen Sound fand ich einfach toll. Hab keine Ahnung mehr was es war, nur dass es elektronisch klang. Das Band habe ich leider mit meinem damaligen Tapedeck zerschossen. So gibt es dazu nur noch wenige Erinnerungen. Mit 16 Jahren habe ich eine CD geschenkt bekommen, diese nannte sich Nu Rave 1.00 presents by Frontpage. Dies gab mir dann einen kleinen Einblick in den Sound der damaligen Zeit und ich war begeistert. Mit 18 Jahren gabs dann die ersten Riemenangetriebenen und nen Reloop Mixer, das Einsteigerset also, und ich hab mir die Platten nachgekauft die mir auf der ersten CD und den nachfolgenden am besten gefallen haben, um diese zu mixen.

Gibt es Vorbilder, die dich als DJ inspieren und warum?
In den Anfangsjahren gab es schon den einen oder anderen. Das hat sich natürlich mit den Jahren etwas gelegt. Trotzdem beeinflussen andere DJs die einen inspirieren weiterhin das eigene Set. Da ist es ganz egal, ob es ein regionaler oder internationaler DJ ist. Inspiration kann ich mir aus vielen Dingen des Acts ziehen. Ob es die Musik, das Gespür für die Situation oder seine eigene Hingabe ist. Natürlich steht der Sound trotzdem im Vordergrund.

Wie würdest du ein typisches Djokerface-Set beschreiben? Was ist dir wichtig? Gibt es Nächte, an die du dich besonders gern erinnerst?
Mmh, schwere Frage. Ich spiele sehr gern längere Set’s oder zumindest lieber ein Set am Stück. In dieser Zeit versuche ich das Publikum auf eine kleine Reise mitzunehmen. Wenn das gelingt, dann ist es perfekt.
Gern erinner ich mich an meinen ersten Abend an dem ich aufgelegt habe. Das war beim Dive Festival 1999 auf der Straße E. Da lief bestimmt nicht alles rund und ich war super nervös, aber es war ein duftes Gefühl. Sehr schön war auch die Party im Herbst 2009 im Zucker Club – viele Grüße nach Bremen – mit Sven Weisemann.

Was ist die Idee hinter dem Mix? Er ist ja wirklich lang…
Die eigentliche Idee war einen Mix zu machen der etwas über meine musikalische Vergangenheit erzählt. Da wollte ich eigentlich nur Old School-Tracks unterbringen. Hab mich letztendlich dagegen entschieden und ein Set gemacht, was eher meinen jetzigen Stil beschreibt. Mit dem einen oder anderen Old School-Track.

Du warst bei “Spaß im Gras” involviert. Erzähl doch mal ein wenig drüber! Und kann man diesbezüglich noch was erwarten?
Ja, Spaß im Gras find ich klasse. Vor 7 oder 8 Jahren war ich dort das erste Mal und war damals schon sehr begeistert. Ein sehr kleines Festival, das von Menschen mit sehr viel Liebe (fast) jedes Jahr auf die Beine gestellt wird. Es gab immer eine Menge zu entdecken, ich hab noch “Mini-Fusion” im Ohr. Letztes Jahr habe ich beim elektronischen Booking etwas beigesteuert. Dieses Jahr pausiert das Sommerfest, hoffen wir das es in Zukunft weitergeht!

Djokerface spielt am 22.08. bei Still Going an der Puschkin-Oase.

When it comes to 2nd hand record shopping there are few sections that are as thrilling to me as the ‘Soundtrack & Library’ one.
An intriguing and beguiling part of the record shop, in between the ’50 Brass Band library tracks’ and ‘BBC Sports Sound Effects’ LP’s you occassionaly come across an old Italian Horror Soundtrack by Goblin or Riz Ortolani or a synth score by John Carpenter or Giorgio Moroder.
Even your mainstream movies have their secret goodies with Pete Best’s ‘Crocodile Dundee’ supplying a low slung Didgeridoo heavy chugger and the breathy, ethereal ‘David at the Institution’ at the end of ‘Endless Love’ is a weird downtempo number worth checking out next time you see it in your local Oxfam.
The library LP is another great mine of little known synth and funk classics in waiting.
Bruton & KPM are the most obvious examples but there are a world of rare and obscure tracks waiting to be discovered by the pioneering digger.
This mix is a collection of Library and Soundtrack music featuring some of the aforementioned producers and labels and, of course, some less well known ones.
It’s horror themed and is best played in a car, alone, on a rainy night. Possibly approaching the outskirts of a rundown industrial city. Maybe you see something out of the corner of your eye. Perhaps there’s an old lady pushing a trolley full of cats. Should you pick up any stray hitchhikers whilst listening to this? Do you really want to stay the night at the decrepit motel you’ve come across…

Wer in den letzten Jahren in Dresden nach wilden Partys mit gehörigem Undergroundflair gesucht hat, kam am Kunst:Stoffbreakz-Kollektiv nicht vorbei. Nach etlichen Partys in verlassenen Gebäuden, dunklen Wäldern und abgeranzten Clubs ist es zwar partytechnisch ein wenig ruhiger geworden, dafür wird der musikalische Output aber immer besser. Seit Anfang des Jahres kann man sich ein Live-Set der beiden Kunst:Stoffbreakz-Mitglieder Cuthead und el.ektrohan bei Mixcloud anhören, leider gab es aber bisher keine Möglichkeit zum Download des Sets. Anlässlich des neuen Cuthead-Albums “City Slicker” (zum freien Download auf der Kunst:Stoffbreakz-Website) wollen wir unbedingt Abhilfe verschaffen und haben den beiden bei der Gelegenheit auch noch ein paar Fragen gestellt.

Wie seid ihr zur elektronischen Musik gekommen? Was hat euch damals so angezogen und hat sich seitdem was verändert?
Cuthead: Angefangen hat bei mir alles mit dem guten alten Hip Hop. Damit habe ich einige Jahre zugebracht, sowohl als DJ als auch als Produzent. Über die Jahre wurden die Beats gerader und die Elemente elektronischer, aber im Grunde genommen hat sich an den Prinzipien nichts verändert: dreckige Samples und ein guter Groove.

el.ektrohan: Ich war mit 14 der größte Cypress Hill und A Tribe Called Quest-Fan, den man sich vorstellen kann. Also eigentlich HipHop from da roots! So kam ich eigentlich von der Kindermusik zur “richtigen Musik”. Da ich seit nunmehr 17 Jahren Klavier spiele – eher Jazz und Funk – wollte ich dann mit 14 auch richtig selbst Musik machen. Zu HipHop konnte ich damals noch nicht spielen, also habe ich jazzy und funky Konzerte mit verschiedenen Bands und auch Solokonzerte gespielt … das dann eher ab 16. Blöd war nur, dass man mit Live-Jazz nur Nerds und Opas anlocken kann. Ich bin dann mit 19 bei Cuthead in die WG eingezogen und habe mit Lunatic Profezzor (heute DJ Feuerstacke, Berlin) angefangen Live-Piano und DJ-Sets (Funk und HipHop) zu kombinieren. Ganz nach den Vorbildern DJ Hype und Jim Dunloop. Wir haben dann ca. 1,5 Jahre viele Auftritte gehabt, bis sich unsere Wege leider getrennt haben. In der Zwischenzeit habe ich bei Cuthead ein paar Features mitgemacht (Sidechainnummer, Murdoc) und Samples eingespielt – das ist dann immer mehr geworden bis endlich (nach ende vom Nu Rave-Hype) auch ein paar mehr Duoprojekte anstanden und durch verschiedene Auftritte eine regelmäßige Zusammenarbeit entstanden ist. Jetzt ist dank 90er Jahre House Revival ja wieder Pop-Piano gefragt! Juhu! Auch auf dem neuen Cuthead-Album gibt es ein paar Features von mir.

Was sind Vorbilder/Styles/musikalische Herangehensweisen, an denen ihr euch orientiert beim Produzieren/Auflegen/Live spielen?
Cuthead: 70s Jazz und Soul, Library Music, Madlib, Dilla, Flying Lotus, Luke Vibert, Hiob (V-Mann), Rhythm and Sound, Martyn, Jan Jelinek, Joris Voorn, Sebo K…

el.ektrohan: Alles was gut klingt und die Ohren durchbläst.

Wo kommt ihr genau her und wie ist eure Beziehung zu Dresden? Wie steht ihr zur Clubkultur in Dresden?
Cuthead: Ich bin zwar in der Nähe von Bischofswerda geboren, habe aber eigentlich mein gesamtes Leben hier verbracht. Und wie mit jeder alten Liebe, geht einem die Angetraute auch gern mal auf den Keks. Natur, Dorf und Stadt in Einem und Eierschecke, YEAH! In der Clubkultur bin ich zur Zeit nicht so aktiv, lieber draußen rumhoppeln.

el.ektrohan: Ich komme eigentlich aus Berlin. Bin aber schon so lange in Dresden, dass ich mich stolz ‘nen Dresdner nenne! Clubs gibt es ein paar gute, leider zu wenig Abwechslung und immer die selben Gesichter, aber meistens macht das ja dann gerade Spass!

Wie, wann und wo ist das Liveset entstanden?
el.ektrohan: Cuthead spielt die MPC 1000 und ich den Roland JP-8080. Nach ein paar geilen Auftritten ohne Mitschnitt habe wir das Set dann in feiner Impromanier bei mir im Zimmer aufgenommen. Natürlich ein bisschen besoffen, daran liegt auch die Kürze des Sets. Denn Cuthead musste am Ende durchs Biertrinken so schiffen, dass wir abbrechen mussten. Sonst wär’s länger!

For the 10th installment of our guest mix series we are glad to welcome Linger & Quiet out of Portland, Oregon to our blog.

Linger & Quiet are Genevieve Dellinger and Matthew Quiet and they do nights called ‘Nightclubbing‘ at Holocene in Portland where they invite upcoming local acts (Miracles Club!) as well as their favourite DJs from around the world (Optimo, Tim Sweeney, Prins Thomas…) to play alongside them. They masterfully combine House, Techno, Disco, New Wave and weird Pop to an irrestible mixture of their own when they are deejaying. For home listening we recommend their Linger & Quiet Radio with a new episode every month.

I’m always happy if there’s a story to go along with our guest mixes. Back in 2008 we were asked by the lovey chaps over at Allez-Allez to submit a mix to their blog. A few month later Linger & Quiet had one there too and while listening to it I thought we share a similar approach when it comes to selecting and combining music for a mix. So there were some email conversations about that and another splendid mix of them on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space and in September 2009 I started out to travel the west coast of the US. Of course, I stopped by in Portland where I was lucky to play my first gig in the United States thanks to the lovely Stephen Quirke. Coincidentally, also on the bill that night were Linger & Quiet. Since the club was an illegal afterhour space and got busted by the police the week before everybody had to bring their own drinks. Apparently, that fact is bad promotion in Portland whereas in Dresden it would be the opposite… Anyway, only about 20 people attended that night but still we had a blast. I enjoyed Genevieve’s and Matt’s hospitality for the rest of my time in Portland which is just a really nice place to be.

I keep fingers crossed that flight tickets to Europe get cheaper soon so they’ll be able to come over to visit friends and family here. Of course, we won’t miss the chance to invite them to Cosmic Dancer on this occasion!

Seit wann legst du auf und wie bist du dazu gekommen?
Angefangen aufzulegen habe ich vor circa acht Jahren, das waren damals eher experimentellere Sachen in Richtung Funkstörung, Autechre etc. Ich glaube die erste Platte, welche ich mir in dem Kontext kaufte war auch die Funkstörung – Vice Versa. Dann habe ich lange viele verschiedene Sachen ausprobiert und habe auch heute noch ein paar Drum & Bass Scheiben in meinem Regal. Richtig öffentlich wurde es erst in den letzten drei bis vier Jahren, wobei mich hier die heutigen „Kann-Leute“ durch Bookings unterstützt haben.
Wie ich dazu gekommen bin ist für mich immer etwas schwer zu beantworten. Es gab dafür kein großes Schlüsselerlebnis, sondern einfach schon lange Interesse an elektronischer Musik. Ich glaube ich habe damals auch nie diese typische Gitarrenmusikzeit gehabt, mich stattdessen eher für Trip Hop Sachen begeistert und bin schon recht früh zu technoider Musik ausgegangen. Es gab Personen, welche mich damals natürlich darin bekräftigt haben und meinten das wäre genau das richtige für mich, genauso wie es heute Personen bzw. Freunde gibt, welche meinen ich sollte unbedingt eigene Tracks produzieren.

Was sind deine Einflüsse in Bezug auf die Musik?
Wie gesagt habe ich schon in einem sehr jungen Alter elektronische Musik gehört und das prägt natürlich. In Leipzig kommt man um gute Musik gar nicht herum, so dass auch dies seine Spuren hinterlässt, aber Einflüsse kommen ja nicht nur aus der Musik, sondern auch aus verschiedenen Begebenheiten und Erfahrungen, welche man macht und einen emotional beeinflussen. Ich bin viel gereist, unter anderem für einige Monate in Norwegen. Diese Reise hat viel in mir bewegt. Berge, das Meer, zeitweise wenig Licht und natürlich Schnee… nichts klingt für mich schöner als Schnee und davon gab es dort lange genug. Ich spiele und mag sehr viele Sachen von Pantha du Prince, eben aus dem Grund, dass er es schafft den Klang von Schnee zu erzeugen. Neue Impulse kommen ebenso von besonderen Menschen, welche man trifft. Zuletzt war bzw. ist das Rafael Anton Irisarri bzw. The Sight Below mit welchem ich in den letzten zwei vergangenen Jahren zu verschiedenen Anlässen spielen durfte. Dabei hatte ich die Möglichkeit ganz andere Seiten von mir zu zeigen. Immer noch spiele ich sehr gern ruhige experimentellere Sachen, nur leider gibt es dazu sonst selten Gelegenheit.

Welche Projekte stehen im Moment bei dir an?
Ganz aktuell gibt es ein „Experiment“ mit mir und MC Amon Bay, welcher eigentlich aus der Drum & Bass Szene kommt. Dazu gab es auch ein Promo-Set, welches jedoch die unterschiedlichsten Meinungen hervorgerufen hat. Wir haben Ende diesen Monats Auftritte zusammen und ich bin selbst sehr gespannt darauf, denke allerdings dass es live eine ganz fantastische Sache wird. Außerdem versuche ich nun langsam mit Unterstützung Ideen für eigene Tracks loszuwerden. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich die Arbeit am Laptop einfach nicht mag und viel zu ungeduldig dafür bin. Wahrscheinlich werde ich auch die letzte auf diesem Planeten sein, welche ausschließlich Vinyls spielt, aber ich komme an die digitalen Sachen auch beim Auflegen gar nicht ran.

Noch ganz begeistert von sven s.x.‘ Set zu Heiligabend in der Galerie Disko (R.I.P.) fasste ich mir ein Herz und bat ihn um einen Guest Mix. Nicht ahnend, dass ich wohl keinen Besseren hätte finden können, um die Kälte da draußen zu vertonen. Grund genug, ihm ein paar Fragen zu stellen.

Seit wann legst du auf?
Seit Sommer 2002. Ich war neugierig. An Auftritte dachte ich da noch nicht aber ein halbes Jahr später fragten mich zwei Freunde, René und René mit denen ich auch manchmal als BitchBrothers auflege, ob ich mit Ihnen zu Silvester spielen möchte. Ab da war’s dann um mich geschehen.

Welche Momente sind dir besonders in Erinnerung geblieben?
Anfang 2004 legte ich mal im Vorprogramm für Sledge im HTO in Bischofswerda auf. Der Club war voll und die Leute gingen gut ab, haben geschrien und sind ausgerastet… da habe ich erstmal begriffen was ich eigentlich mache. [lacht] Im Herbst des gleichen Jahres haben wir mal im Rosi’s in Berlin auf dem kleinen Floor gespielt und irgendwann waren die Wighnomy Brothers (die für den großen Floor gebucht waren und zu meinen großen Helden gehören) auf der Tanzfläche und haben zu unserem Set getanzt. Auch ein krasses Erlebnis. Was noch? Ja, das Set jetzt zu Heiligabend in der Galerie Disko als am Ende alle komplett ausgerastet sind. Geil!

Wo kaufst du deine Platten?
Am Anfang, als ich noch in Ottendorf gewohnt habe, bin ich immer in’s T.O.A.S.T. Records gegangen. Als ich dann nach Dresden gezogen bin und mich besser auskannte, bin ich aber schnell auf’s Fat Fenders gekommen was ich besonders auch als Ort für die Kommunikation über Musik schätze.

Gibt es zu dem Mix eine Geschichte?
Naja, mein letzter Mix ist ja nun schon fast ein Jahr alt und es wurde mal wieder Zeit. Und dann hast du mich gefragt und ich hatte die Zeit und die Muße dazu. Von der Stimmung her spielt sicher die Jahreszeit eine große Rolle, Winter ist nun mal genau mein Ding. Ich freu mich immer total wenn ich vor die Tür gehe, alles ist weiß und es ist bitterkalt. Dann genieß ich die Sonne noch viel mehr, daher auch der Titel.

For the first post in 2010 we have asked our good friend Kacper Kapsa aka Pnk.Discorp to provide us with an insight into the rich musical heritage of his native country Poland. And what he came up with is nothing short of amazing!

Czary Mary Polish Grooves Mix selected and mixed by Pnk.Discorp

1. Akademia Pana Kleksa – Kosmiczny prolog (Cosmic Prologue)
The song originates from the cult film series about Ambroży Kleks and his academy for male youth. The soundtrack was created by Andrzej Korzyński and has many futuristic references. Cosmic Prologue opens the first part of Kleks’s adventures.

2. Papa Dance – Narodziny Szejka (Sheik’s Birthday)
Papa Dance’s career has always been a balancing act between music and kitsch. Except for their debut album, which this song stems from, in which they have represented the second category – kitsch.

3. Alex Band – A w schronisku bal (And at the hotel there’s a ball)
A funk orchestra supported with Zuzu’s vocals. I did the “In a light edit” especially for this set.

4. Lombard – Diamentowa Kula (Diamond Ball)
A song from their debut album – ‘Death to discotheque’. The LP was an incredible success and led to nationwide media attention, mainly thanks to the hits sung by the female vocalist. This one is exceptionally performed by Grzegorz Stróżniak – the founder of the band. The version used here is an edit which you can download from my Soundcloud site.

5. Małgorzata Ostrowska – Meluzyna
Another piece from Mr. Kleks’s collection. This one is from the second part of his adventures. The song is sung by previously mentioned female vocalist of Lombard. Meluzyna is one the most perfect songs in the history of Polish music. If it was released now by e.g. Aeroplane it would certainly be a hit.

6. Arp Life – Baby Bump
Arp Life is the studio Project of Andrzej Korzyński (the author of Mr. Kleks’s Academy soundtrack). It was created at the close of the 70’s. Unfortunately, the band released only one album – Jumbo Jet. Of course, the track is taken from this album but the author of the re-edit is one the most talented Polish producers: Maciej Zambon.

7. Budka Suflera – Noc komety (The Night of the Comet)
Another edit by Zambon, who is a DJ and a member of Kukabara Soundsystem. He also edits, re-mixes and promotes Polish pieces of music. He just does a good job. Here: edit of the piece by Budka Suflera – most likely the ugliest band of the world.

8. Republika – Halucinations
Republic and their charismatic leader Grzegorz Ciechowski were one of the most talented bands of the 80’s. Their music was packed with literary references and association to psychedelic music.

9. Czerwone Gitary – Coda
‘Coda’ closes the LP ‘Rytm Ziemi’ (the Rhythm of the Earth). An regular rhythm, distorted Moog, and everything else exemplary for a band famous for mawkish songs à la the Beatles. This song bears no traces of this mawkish character though.

Pnk.Discorp is playing our Cosmic Dancer night on February 20 alongside Maximilian Skiba who has just finished a record with Kathy Diamond for Gomma Dance Tracks.

And here’s an interview with Pnk.Discorp we did in preparation of the show.

Q: Where exactly in Poland are you from?
A: I live in Czestochowa in south Poland. The town is known for the famous Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra that is the home of the Black Madonna painting, a shrine to the Virgin Mary. Every year, millions of pilgrims from all over the world come to Częstochowa to see it.

Q: When did you get involved in music and escpecially in electronic music?
A: I started to get interested in music when I was about 15 or 16 years old. At first I was into rock music, later I discovered LCD Soundsystem and then fell in love with
NY label DFA. That was six years ago.

Q: What is the club scene like in Czetochowa?
A: The club scene is dominated by mainstream music. We’ve got lots of discotheques and some rock clubs, but we’ve got only two clubs with electronic and funky music. Best place in town is Rura Club with regular parties in the field of hip-hop, disco, house. The biggest names who played there have been Oliver Koletzki, Ozgur Can and Catz’n’Dogs.

Q: Is Clubbing in Poland focused on Warszawa or do you have some proper pop cities? Can you recommend some regions or cities apart from your hometown?
A: Indeed, there are clubs in Warszawa which have sufficient means to do parties with well-known names. Holy Ghost!, Mark E and Juan Maclean played there last year. But, you know…it’s the capital. At the moment the most interesting clubbing city in Poland is Poznan. They’ve got a lot of clubs there with open-mind owners and great DJ-Teams or producers. For instance the Kukuabara Soundsystem. They have clubnight called ‘The Disco’ and invite artist like the Permanent Vacation-guys or Sally Shapiro. And there are some nice festivals in summer. I can really recommend the ‘Audioriver’ Festival in Plock where you can find lots of different styles of electronic music.

Q: Can you tell us something about the International Music Festival ‘Astigmatic’ where Max was awared ‘Newcomer of the Year’ back in 2005.
Does it still exist?
A: Well.. I would like to know as well…Last year I bought a release affiliated to the festival with classic chopin music reworked by guys like The Glimmers, Morgan Geist
or Munk. Great record! But what is happening with the festival. God only knows:-D

Q: From your experience: What does a Polish audience distinguishes from the ones abroad?
A: I think that the Polish audience is more enthusiastic and maybe a bit more crazy than audiences abroad. But I think that people abroad are more open for new
music and styles and they don’t go to party because is trendy but because they want to have fun.

Q: And what are you up to next? Can we expect new releases?
A: At the moment I am finishing a mix tape featuring some classic polish big beat songs from the 60′s and
70′s called Piastesli where I try to showcase what happened in the music scene at the time. I have dug out a lot of forgotten and rare songs. The mix will be available over at
RVNG. In the near future I’m also planning to start up a net label with Zambon form Kukabara called ‘Very Polish Cut-Outs’. On there you will find a number of mixes and edits – but only polish ones. It will be hot! What’s else? Lots of edits!

Q: What are you looking forward the most during your stay in Dresden (except of the party)?
A: I love Dresden! I came down to Cosmic Dancer when Tim Sweeney played here. A fantastic party and a beautiful city. Last time round I didn’t manage to visit the old
railway station. I’m looking forward to do it this time but I’m waiting for a guide… I’m also looking forward to check out all the record shops. Do you have any?

Q: How was life for a polish musician before the fall of the Iron Curtain? Was there a heavy censorship? Could a musician deviate from the communist path without being afraid of reprisals?
A: For everyone who is interested in Polish music I would recommend the BBC documentary about polish 80′s punk festival Jarocin called My Blood Your Blood. It shows exactly what happened during those weird times: That your weren’t allowed to listen to any western music for example or lyrics of songs that needed to be changed because the violated governmental guidelines. At the time musicians who tried do music that deviated from the norm always had trouble with security services. But lot of people still did and became famous heroes in the underground. I hope that these times will be never forgotten.

Q: It seems that there was a prospering, internationally successful Disco and Funk scene in 70′s Poland. Who are the key artists and what do you think makes them special for foreign listeners?
A: As already mentioned it happened to be a strange time, but ideal for Polish music. Why that is so? Perhaps the Iron Curtain prevented bad sounds penetrating in from the other side. In the past we’ve had loads of talented musicians, who perhaps did not only think about their five minutes of fame. When I listen to Polish music now I see an intersection between good and bad times. Unfortunately that happend all before I was born. After this polish songs began to become increasingly commercial.
The Polish taste – at beginning of 90′s was obsessed with all sorts of new styles – like disco polo (the polish version of Eurodance, translator’s note). It was terrible.

Q: Were there any musicians involved in the Solidarność-movement?
A: Yes, Solidarność had its own bard – Jacek Kaczmarski. He was a songwriter and wrote amazing lyrics. He gave people faith in better days to come. I remember the tapes from my dad, which he recorded on Kaczmarski concerts.

Q: And how’s life today for a musician doing electronic music? Is there a chance to make a living of it? Do you have subsidies like an artists’ social insurance?
A: Poland isn’t Utopia. I’m lucky because I’ve got a nice job and I can make music and play parties. But I know a guy who makes french electro, has releases on European labels but still has to work in supermarket. In major cities this situation is changing. You can probably try to make a living from making music.
Regarding subsidies. You can get some, but it isn’t easy. The Government isn’t as helpful as we like it to be. For example I’ve got the possibility to release my mix, but then I would need to get a license for all of the songs used. The expenditure of licensing however is greater than the expected revenue. Any question? Nobody said it was easy…

Wenn ihr nach dem ganzen Weihnachtstrubel etwas Besinnung der etwas anderen Art nötig habt, haben wir hier genau das Richtige für euch. Eine gute Stunde Musik, fachkundig selektiert und gemixt von #npnk. Aber lassen wir den Künstler doch am Besten selbst zu Wort kommen.

Der Mix heißt “Floating in a Lagrange-Point around Uranus”
Die Librations- oder Lagrange-Punkte sind die nach Joseph-Louis Lagrange benannten Gleichgewichtspunkte des eingeschränkten Dreikörperproblems der Himmelsmechanik. An diesen Punkten im Weltraum heben sich die Gravitationskräfte benachbarter Himmelskörper und die Zentrifugalkraft der Bewegung gegenseitig auf, so dass jeder der drei Körper in seinem Bezugssystem kräftefrei ist und bezüglich der anderen beiden Körper immer denselben Ort einnimmt.

Man treibt also kräftefrei im All und bemerkt es nicht einmal.
So ähnlich ging es mir bei dem Mix. Ich wollte einfach mal was anderes machen als ein Happy-House-Disco-Club-Dance-Set. Dieser Mix ist eher was zum Einigeln zuhause, und die Wintertage im warmen Bett zu verbringen.
Er ist ein klein wenig düster geworden, aber auch ein paar lichtere Momente.

Our friend Sebastiano of Club Silencio has just done a gorgeous guest mix for us. Grazie mille! In his own words: “Hey guys, here is a special mix for your blog. I would like to take the opportunity to present a new side project of mine called Robotalco that is solely dedicated to the roots house scene, such as early U.S. house music, garage and deep house. I will be releasing two records soon under that name: One on Mr.Chinn’s (Rongdfa, American Standard) new label called Godwrk and another one on Canyons’ (Dfa/Modular) Hole In The Sky Records.

The mix I have put together is inspired by my first taste of club culture in the 90′s, perhaps the golden age for Italian clubs! I was just a kid back then but my older friends started listening to mix tapes from a club called Ethos Mama Club in Gabicce (one of the most important clubs in the famous ‘riviera romagnola’) and Vae Victis (a very cool afterhour). The resident djs that played there were amongst others: Ralf, Ricky Montanari and Flavio Vecchi and they used to spin this kind of wonderful deep and groovy house music from great labels like Nu Groove, Bottom Line, and many others. Recently this sound has influenced me a lot and and I tried to recreate that kind of mood with a new Club Silencio remix  for The Parallels, a Canadian band that will be out soon on Thisisnotanexit recods ( Listen to it here). Unser guter Freund und Plattenwizard Question.Marc und sein knöpfchendrehender Kompagnon The Bad Producer haben uns im Vorfeld ihrer Show im Februar 2009 dieses Liveset geschickt. Es heißt “Tribute To Ron Hardy” und gibt einen ganz guten Eindruck von dem, was damals in der Galerie Disko passiert ist. Q.M legt auf, während TBP auf der ‘sound machine’ herumschwurbelt. So knuffig nennen die beiden ihren selbstgebastelten Seuqencer, ein Teil, das man in Aktion gesehen haben muss. Mit Unterstützung ihrer Peers vom Cut-Up Collective kommt dann sowas hier raus: Jack par exellence mit Lieblingsliedern gestreckt.

Cosmic Disco ist die sicherlich recht programmatisch betitelte Plattform der Mancunians Baggy, THP, Niles und Silvestre. Vier DJs und Radio-Moderatoren, die schon seit Ewigkeiten den Staub aus Manchesters’ Plattenläden inhalieren und trotzdem noch lange nicht genug davon haben, über alte Platten zu schreiben und ineinander zu vermengen.
Seit neuestem mischt auch classic Freak Luke Solomon mit und erklärt den Balearica Rookies dieser Welt seine Sicht der Dinge in Sachen Wort, Bild und Ton.
Der exemplarische Mix hier von Niles ist vollgestopft mit diversen Leckerbissen aus Italo, Synthie und Beatkram. Man kann schon sagen: Tight abgeliefert.

Diesen Mix hier haben uns die fabelhaften Allez Allez-Boys anlässlich ihres Auftritts im März 2008 im Wettbüro zur Verfügung gestellt. Alle Dresdner beachten bitte die Präsenz eines Lokalhelden auf dem Mix.
